What distribution and what locale ?

If you are using Debian, can you use 'reportbug' to give us more information ?

A clue just arrived this morning.  It may be a locale issue.
Can you create a new workbook and try to SAVE it in xls format ?
If that crashes too then we can patch the bug for 1.0.7 (due today).
