This is a known bug that is being worked on. Hopefully, it will be fixed in GNOME 1.4.1. In the meantime, if you're using Red Hat Linux, please try the gnome-libs and gnome-core packages available at http://www.gnome.org/~kmaraas and see if those help. Please also tell us what version of gettext you have and which locale you are running with? You could try using Posix/C locale and see if that makes the problem go away.
