You are the third person to report this crash, but I have not been able to replicate it. Can you send us a copy of the file ?

Are you using packages from ximian ?

This is really really irritating me. Why can't any of us replicate this. Wait! I'll take a shot in the dark. What locale are you using ?
If you are using Debian, can you use 'reportbug' to give us more information ?
A clue just arrived this morning. It may be a locale issue. Can you create a new workbook and try to SAVE it in xls format ? If that crashes too then we can patch the bug for 1.0.7 (due today).
1.0.7 may have a patch for this. Please give it a try. Thanks
Did 1.0.7 fix this ? I'd really like to close this issue.

Damn I hate cut-n-paste code. I hade hoped this would be fixed in 1.0.7 but apparently I only fixed the export version of the code. The import still had the problem. It has now been patched in CVS (both branches) and will be fixed in 1.0.8, which I'll make shortly to handle this specificly. The issue boilds down to gnumeric not handling XL import when your locales are mis-installed or missing.
