GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 80167
Suits should be visible without having to right click cards
Last modified: 2012-01-31 23:22:54 UTC
When playing aisleriot, card suits should be visible without having to right click on the card. Currently the suits of many cards under the top card can't be determined without right clicking on the card in question. This is a real pain in the arse for games like Spider and Spiderette where piles can't be moved when suits don't match, but often you need to right click cards to find out which card is causing the problems. Regardless, my wife switched back to WindowsXP to play spider because you can see the suit without the need to right click in WinXP.

If you look at the screen shot, you can see that you can't tell what suits the K, Q and J (they are actually diamonds) in the top left corner are, or the two Aces in the 2nd row from the right.
in GNOME2 playing freecell in aisleriot I couldn't right click to show the suit even, so I am upping the severity due to the added difficulty.

Not meaning to nag, but my wife's (who's WinXP/Fedore laptop hard-drive died leaving her to use my Fedora desktop machine) first comment when asked how was she finding the lack of WinXP said that Linux was fine, but that it was annoying that the card suits weren't showing in Aisleriot. I told her I'd filed a bug and that I'd check to see the progress and nothing seems to have happened for 6 months and you still can't see the suits very well (especially on picture cards). Is this still being worked on?
Oh, I should add that I'm using gnome-games-2.5.6.
I've just uploaded the code to fix this to CVS. This should have been trivial to fix, but because I chose to schedule it as part of the drawing code rewrite it got delayed nine months or so along with the rest of the aisleriot drawing rewrite. Unfortunately this code will not appear in 2.6 (it is too experimental), but will be in 2.7.0 in a few weeks. If there are no obvious issues with the spacing change I will probably back-port the spacing (not the code) to 2.6. Only two years to get this fixed :(.
Thanks Callum, my wife will be thrilled. (It's her pet peeve.)
This bug is being reassigned to the "general" component so we can close the aisleriot bugzilla component. Apologies for the mass email!
