Jody, this appears to be a bonobo build.
This appears to be associateed with libole somehow. Another user reported something similar. Lets get an example of it, ideally a back trace from a gnumeric with a debuggable version of libole2.

Are you using packages from ximian ?
If you are using Debian, can you use 'reportbug' to give us more information ?

A clue just arrived this morning. It may be a locale issue. Can you create a new workbook and try to SAVE it in xls format ? If that crashes too then we can patch the bug for 1.0.7 (due today).
