GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 790520
Brightness flickering on Wacom MobileStudio
Last modified: 2019-03-20 11:50:54 UTC
I just installed Fedora 26 (GNOME 3.26) on a Wacom MobileStudio Pro 13" computer, with a Intel® Iris™ Graphics 550 graphics card. The screen brightness is just going up, down, up down. Completely random. Checking for instance in a TTY terminal, it looks like I see no brightness change. So my current assumption is that it is GNOME-related (and not for instance the video card driver). Any data you need to diagnose?
Note: it happens both with GNOME on X and Wayland.
It turns out that GNOME detected that this laptop has an ambient light sensor, therefore it activated the "Automatic brightness". So the good news is that it's not a bug regarding to brightness changing. I still keep this open because it is still a bug regarding by sensitivity. The brightness changing was completely crazy (I could even show you a video showing it; no way to work this way). There needs to be either a better detection of brightness change sensitivity or at least to be able to customize the sensitivity range or something.
By the way, I notice that the annoying brightness flickering still happens in the login screen because the Power settings only affect the current user. There should probably be a way to change the settings for GDM. Or maybe even better/simpler, the "Automatic brightness" should just never be activated on GDM. This doesn't make much sense to have such feature at login.
