GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 782987
Thread list: Don't assume strings like Dr., Prof., Mr, Mrs etc are first names
Last modified: 2021-07-05 13:27:15 UTC
In Geary's second column where the list of threads is shown, there is a comma-separated list of first names, e.g. Name, Name, Name SUBJECT LINE Teaser text for the thread... This normally works quite well (although it assumes that you are on a first-name basis with everyone), however, I just had the case where someone added a "Dr." in front of their first name and in this case case Geary presents something like: Alexander, Dr., Jose Which looks weird. I suspect this might become actually harmful when working at a university (or similar) where lots of people have some kind of title in their name, because you might run into situations like: Dr., Prof., Dr. My proposal would be this: If there are three or more space-separated segments in a name, and the first one is a title or similar abbreviation in English or the user's language, only the second part of the name should be used.
This would indeed be good to have, it would also make a good place to start if anyone would like to learn how to make code contributions.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
