GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 779719
libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so doesn't work on Firefox >= 52
Last modified: 2017-03-07 20:48:19 UTC
With last Firefox update (52) (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/52.0/releasenotes/): "Removed support for Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI) plugins other than Flash. Silverlight, Java, Acrobat and the like are no longer supported." The plugin for Gnome Shell is affected too.
Yes, the plugin is being retired in favor of extensions support in gnome-software. In the meanwhile, there's a non-plugin browser-based solution available at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/gnome-shell-integration/.
The extension doesn't work alone. It needs the plugin.

(In reply to Simón from comment #2) > The extension doesn't work alone. It needs the plugin. No, it needs the chrome-gnome-shell connector[0], not the old NPAPI plugin. The plugin in the gnome-shell source tree is on life support until the extension integration in Software is fully up to par, then it will be removed. It is definitively not going to be updated to a completely different browser API. [0] https://git.gnome.org//browse/chrome-gnome-shell
