Description Helmut Grohne 2016-12-22 19:39:16 UTC
A number of tools including pentabarf, wafer, exchange are able to publish calendars in ical format. Such calenders may be retrieved by issuing a HTTP GET request on a certain (usually unmemorable) URL. I tried adding such a URL with the "Calendar settings", "Add", "From web ...", entered the URL and was greeted by a username/password prompt. I did not expect a username/password prompt and do not know what to enter there as no password is needed to retrieve a calendar.

This may be related to #762706. While that bug is concerned with clearing the confusion about "From web ...", this report is concerned with the ability to use published (read-only) calendars. I didn't find any way to use those. Maybe I missed something, but irc user feaneron asked me to file this report anyway. I hope it helps with the development of gnome-calendar.

feaneron asked me to put up an example calendar: If you navigate to http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/archive/2013/embedded-linux-conference-europe-/program/schedule, you can see a conference schedule in ics format at the bottom. The actual calendar link to be added to a program like gnome-calendar is http://embeddedlinuxconferenceeu2013.sched.com/all.ics. Note that these calendars typically are not meant to be downloaded once and then used, but updated periodically (but still read-only from the pov of the consumer).

I'm centralizing all the information about adding Web-based calendars in bug 781421.
