Description Konstantin Boyandin 2016-12-08 08:42:55 UTC
One of features removed from profiles was capability to set title/define window title behaviour (allow changing, prevent changing, gluing together).

Since there's no equivalent for these features in current gnome-terminal versions, I kindly request to return those functionality. It helps greatly to navigate multiple windows/tabbed groups.
Comment 1 Christian Persch 2019-11-20 21:57:32 UTC
The tab title is set by the programme running inside the terminal, using escape sequences. You can set an *initial title* (ie for programmes that don't themselves emit these sequences) using the --title option for gnome-terminal.
Comment 2 Konstantin Boyandin 2019-11-20 23:57:07 UTC
@Christian Persch Exactly how I am supposed to set the titles this way for tabbed terminals?

This isn't a solution. This is just another excuse for not restoring the tool that doesn't have any other 100% working replacement.
Comment 3 Christian Persch 2019-11-21 00:53:13 UTC
Please don't re-open bugs that a maintainer has closed as WONTFIX.

It seems that in the last 3 years since you filed this bug, you either have done fine without this feature, or you have been using a different terminal which has this feature and thus suited you better than gnome-terminal.

I'll also note that this situation is exactly like a web browser, which also has many tabs, the title of each of which is set by the web page inside that tab.

How wonderfully convenient - maintainers, not actual users decide which features are best, which should be deleted and so on.

No problem.

Yes, I ceased using your official release available from standard OS repository, as soon as I understood all the requests on restoring actually useful features fall on deaf ears.

I use either my own custom build, derived from version that you haven't yet castrated, or an alternate terminal, which both still have useful functions.

Have a nice day.
Comment 5 Christian Persch 2019-11-21 12:08:06 UTC
Do you even hear yourself? How rude! Let's make this clear: you are entitled to precisely *nothing* from me. I develop gnome-terminal, for free, as *I* see fit. *You* get this programme for free, as a gift; and if it does not suit your needs or wants, you can simply decline to use it. You do not have the right to get irate with me when I decline to work for you for free to change it according to *your* tastes.
Comment 6 Konstantin Boyandin 2019-11-21 12:20:59 UTC
It's hardly a proper place to discuss who owes what to whom.

I only add that I stopped donating to Gnome Foundation cause, after I noticed that Gnome Terminal developers are removing feature after feature and are completely ignoring their users' requests to bring those back.

I made my choice already. If I actually offended you - my apologies.

I solved the problem for myself and you definitely owe nothing to me.
Comment 7 Akos Korosi 2019-11-21 15:15:55 UTC
Just to add my two cents without the intention to to add fuel to the fire.

It is definitely not only Konstantin's wish to get back this feature. I (with a few other colleges) was also waiting for this for some time and still watching this thread.
I also do understand that we can not command a developer to spend his free time on something which he/she doesn't want to.

Out of curiosity, if someone re-implements this feature, would it be merged?
Comment 8 Konstantin Boyandin 2019-11-21 15:36:02 UTC
@Akos Korosi, a good question - whether the devs would accept pull request of that kind.

If there's a corresponding mailing list, perhaps this discussion could be transferred there.

Thanks for the support.
