Description Josef Andersson 2016-06-26 19:43:05 UTC
Hi,
I'm working on an updated Swedish translation for Gnumeric, and whilst doing that some general questions popped up:

Here they are:

*** Mostly Gnumeric is spelled with an capital G except at a few places where it's spelled with lower case - I guess it should be capital G there too.

Example:
#: ../schemas/org.gnome.gnumeric.gschema.xml.in.in.h:22
msgid ""
This setting will be used only in a new gnumeric session

*** In some places there are references to linear programs, but shouldn't they really refer "linear programming problems". Example:
#: ../plugins/glpk/glpk-write.c:144 ../plugins/lpsolve/lpsolve-write.c:145
#, c-format
msgid "Only linear programs are handled

#: ../plugins/lpsolve/plugin.xml.in.h:3
msgid "LPSolve Linear Program Solver"

***
In cases like the following example, should words in capital like CLIPBOARD and PRIMARY be translated?
Or are they variables?
In any case, I guess comments regarding that would make translation easier. Example:

#: ../schemas/org.gnome.gnumeric.gschema.xml.in.in.h:83
msgid "Prefer CLIPBOARD over PRIMARY selection"

*** Should words in brackets [ ] be translated? Example:
#: ../src/tools/analysis-anova.c:235 ../src/tools/analysis-anova.c:593
msgid "\"ANOVA\";[Red]\"Invalid ANOVA: Missing Observations\""

*** Mostly Gnumeric is spelled with an capital G except at a few places where it's spelled with lower case - I guess it should be capital G there too.

I fixed a bunch of those. It is really on a case-by-case basis, so please
let me know if any other that might need fixing.

*** In some places there are references to linear programs, but shouldn't they really refer "linear programming problems".

That's really the same thing. These have been known as "linear programs"
in math circles for many decades. So I'll leave them as-is.

*** In cases like the following example, should words in capital like CLIPBOARD and PRIMARY be translated?

They probably should be translated to whatever the X server documentation
used for those concepts. In practice, however, you could translate them
to "budgetary submarines" and no-one would ever notice.

*** Should words in brackets [ ] be translated? Example:
#: ../src/tools/analysis-anova.c:235 ../src/tools/analysis-anova.c:593
msgid "\"ANOVA\";[Red]\"Invalid ANOVA: Missing Observations\""

No translation.

Thanks for your answers - I've updated my translation a bit.

I do think a few comments about the variables in capital and about the words in [ in the po-file would help fellow translators in not getting confused about them.

This problem has been fixed in our software repository. The fix will go into the next software release. Once that release is available, you may want to check for a software upgrade provided by your Linux distribution.
