This option just gets ignored and the panel starts up. Should print out the
version and exit.

Hmm, havoc ... I thought so too when I first looked at this but ...

nothing else does it ... gnome-terminal, gnome-about, nautilus etc. 

I presumed it was a libgnome thing ...
