Description Jeb Eldridge 2015-11-07 04:02:07 UTC
Please bring a dark theme to GIMP - After using PhotoShop and PaintShop Pro, their darker UIs make GIMP feel inferior and outdated - PhotoShop and PaintShop Pro, along with other photo editing software by Adobe and Corel Software have been specifically chosen dark default themes as these decrease strain on the eyes, which helps out when doing a lot of graphic design, and also further makes the image stand out on it's own against the backdrop of the application I am editing in, making it easier to focus.

This could be a nice addition, if done right (many of the dark themes out there fail horribly for users - it seems like their authors had only a few applications in mind and stopped once the look was satisfactory for those).

Maybe you'd like to contribute - a good approach might be to team up with a theme author of a theme that works quite well, and ensure that all UI elements of GIMP look and work nice and usable?

We had such a project with other GIMP contributors, especially associated with partly existing symbolic icons (idea starting with this screenshot: https://plus.google.com/+AlexandreProkoudine/posts/LP1pWr7YEgA).

The icons were available here: http://www.jesusda.com/files/symbolic-gimp.7z
And a light version here: http://www.jesusda.com/files/symbolic-gimp_light.7z

I encountered some problems with the dev version, which are that we now use icon themes and I could not manage to get a new icon theme to work and could not make the time to investigate more. If anyone is more knowledgeable into theming, this would be good. It means you'll have to work with the dev version (future GIMP 2.10). As I said, it works differently and working 2.8 themes are broken with 2.10.

So as Michael says, if you are willing to contribute a first version of the theme, we would be happy to include it in GIMP.

Close as duplicate of bug 759649, which is newer but the reporter also submit a candidate theme.
