test case

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open the attached document (browser-saved css file from gnome.org) in Gedit
2. Click/arrow to move the caret amongst the characters in first three lines
3. Click/arrow to move the caret to the fourth line
4. Get into the app menu and choose Preferences.

Expected results: Gedit would not become non-responsive.

Actual results: Gedit becomes non-responsive for a prolonged period of time. GNOME displays a dialog asking if you want to force quit Gedit or wait.

My bad. I thought it was different because if syntax highlighting is disabled, there's no non-responsiveness. Even though the "line" is huge.

The problem apparently occurs when there are lots of tags applied, e.g. with syntax highlighting, when highlighting search occurrences, etc.
