GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 755889
Application window stops responding (freezes, hangs) if network-accessed file is temporarily unavailable
Last modified: 2016-01-13 10:30:46 UTC
One method to reproduce on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: 1) Create a virtual linux server using libvirt or anything with a pause button, SSH enabled. 2) Using nautilus to open an SFTP connection to it (sftp://myserver.local). 3) Open a file using gedit from nautilus. 4) Pause the server in libvirt. 5) Try typing something. 6) The gedit window turns grey and stops responding until you un-pause the server. Suggested preferable behaviour: 1) Whatever gedit is doing or waiting for, allow the user to continue editing. 2) If there's a timeout or other problem, report it, but don't freeze the window. Did you read https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Gedit/ReportingBugs "Make sure that you use an up-to-date version of gedit" 3.10 is quite old. Can you reproduce the bug with gedit 3.18 or 3.16?
gedit 3.10 is quite old but it's the most recent version working correctly on non gnome-shell environments...
But the upstream developers don't maintain that version anymore. If nobody is maintaining it upstream, the bugs should be reported downstream. If you're willing to help the maintenance of the 3.10 version, you're welcome. You could backport bug fixes to the gnome-3-10 branch, create new releases, etc. Note: gedit 3.18 works normally fine on the latest Xfce, to take a non-gnome-shell example.
