Description ragnese 2015-09-28 15:07:44 UTC
I was trying to transfer some files from my phone to my laptop via Nautilus.

I selected the files in one tab and then tried to paste them into a directory open in another tab. They were big files, so they didn't immediately appear in the new/empty directory.

The widget that appeared in Nautilus's header bar did not grab my attention at all, so I assumed that the files were not transferring. So I tried it several more times before I realized that I then had a huge queue of files preparing to transfer!

I suggest adding some gaudy animation or something. Maybe make the widget blink. Or perhaps open an old-style transfer dialog and show it "minimizing" into the widget.

I can only imagine I wont be the only one who gets confused by its subtlety.

Raising severity from minor to major as this can lead to harmful behaviour as the mistake described above shows.

The easiest fix that comes to mind would be to pop open the popover as soon as anything changes in there (new transfer queued, tranfer completed…).

I did not discover the progress widget for weeks (or probably months). Actually, this is not quite true. I saw the button multiple times, but never made the mental connection to progress: instead, I believed this to be a shortcut to the Disk Usage Analyzer.

I guess, the reason is that its current design says "input element" to me, with no indication of being also an "output element". I guess displaying a bar instead of a pie chart and using the usual color for progress bars would have helped me to identify this sooner.

simple approach by not changing UI, maybe by renaming target uncompleted file while copying or moving. For example desktop.iso to .inprogress.desktop.iso

so at least we aware to not doing action to target file, and wait the progress bar

Should I create new bug?

In my case, using gnome 3.20:
1. Copy file from samba to home
2. Wait long enough, but file not fully copied
3. Remembered I want to move the file to USB, so I just moved it because I forget to check the progress
4. Moved incomplete file to USB
