GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 747593
[Feature Request] Organize icons automatically to different areas on the desktop
Last modified: 2018-01-02 18:50:01 UTC
so far the icons can be arranged to the left of the screen on right click menu, but it should be nicd to be able to organized them on the other sides of the screen like to the right, similar to Mac OS X, also to the top and bottom of the screen, and the option to be arranged automatically similar to microsoft windows; a submenu should appear when selecting "organize icons" -> to the right, to the left, to the top, to the bottom, four options plus the option to arrange them automatically acording to the selected position.
Created attachment 337010 [details] Desktop screenshots This is one of the reasons why we should be able to organize desktop icons by more than the name as it currently does (screenshots attached): 1. I love to use "dash to dock" extension, always positioned to the left of the screen with "intelligent autohide" set to "on" and "panel mode:extend the screen edge" active (screenshot # 1). 2. Also I set "dodge windows" to "only maximized windows" inside "intelligent autohide customization" (screenshot # 2). 3. With everything setup, I activate "show desktop" using gnome-tweak-tool and the files I have on desktop folder appears, so when I right-click on desktop and select "organize Desktop by Name" the icons get behind the dock because it was previously setup inside "intelligent autohide customization" (screenshot # 3). 4. It gets worse when "keep aligned" checkmark is removed... (screenshot # 4). 5. If you implement more options to organize the icons, for example to the right, it should look like screenshot # 5 but in my opinion it would look better that screenshot # 6... Note: In screenshot # 6 the icons don't behind the dock when "intelligent autohide" is set to off, so if you toggle on and off quickly the icons will move accordingly...
Hi, Ricardo. This is not a bad suggestion. However, nobody is actively working on the "show files on desktop" option, which has been turned off by default for a few years and barely maintained. That's why there has been no response nor progress on this for such a long time. Unless someone shows up willing to take care of "files on desktop" as a separate project, it is unlikely there will be further improvements and bugfixes.
Starting with version 3.28, nautilus will not handle the "files on desktop background" feature. For better alternatives, read this blog post https://csorianognome.wordpress.com/2017/12/21/nautilus-desktop-plans/
