I tried to read the document http://math.aalto.fi/opetus/sovtoda/oppikirja/Johdanto.pdf by Evince 3.10.3. In a formula for geometric mean (in Finnish geometrinen keskiarvo) on page 40, it looks like the Evince renders the letter L to the formula of geometric mean. The same bug seems to be in Xpdf.

This is not a bug.  That PDF is using a nonembed font 'MTExtra' for some math symbols.  If you don't have the font installed you will get the wrong symbol.  You can complain to whoever created that PDF and ask them to embed the font, or install the 'MT Extra' font.
