You've probably heard of Riseup (<riseup.net>). Very nice guys and gals who try to do everything to protect your privacy, providing almost everything you need with detailed documentation.

Sadly Geary doesn't support Riseup email much. Yeah, it works, but all the folders are "doubled" under Inbox as tags, and sent messages fail to be saved because the folder is non-existent.

The fix to the former is setting the IMAP root to "INBOX". The latter is using a different folder called "Sent".

Thanks.

Riseup seems to be using Dovecot - does anyone know which version?

I'll need some debug logging to be able to diagnose the issue - can someone please try the following:

1. Run Geary using the command:

> geary -d --log-network | tee geary.out

2. Quit it once the spinner down the bottom of the folder list has stopped spinning
3. Open geary.out in a text editor and find/replace any personal info with redacted text
4. Attach the redacted file to this bug.

Thanks!

geary_cleaned.out

i did use geary for some time, moving some mails.

1) i can confirm, that some folders were visibly twice (trash/Trash, Sent/Gesendet/Gesendete Objekte, Entwürfe/Drafts)

2) the server message on exceeding the quota should be shown to the user as it contains instructions to solve the issue.

3) on the next start after entering my mailbox password (with the option 'save password' checked) gnome's keyring manager asked for a password. I do not use it normally, canceled the dialogue and geary quit. instead a message that the password wasn't saved could be shown.

4) is it possible to delete folders?

I did get the output, but I have 4 email accounts configured in geary and I don't want to upload the details of all of them, what do I need to delete to be sure I dont't do that? Is deleting email addresses and servers enough? I can send it to you in a mail though if you want, I already scanned it through but it's really long).

Mostly your account email addresses, login name if you built Geary your self and host names. You can send it directly to me if you'd like, however. Ta!

Haha, whoops. wrongbug.com.
Comment 9 Juraj Fiala 2017-09-09 09:49:42 UTC
OK, folders are no longer duplicated but Geary still uses incorrect Drafts, Sent & Trash folders.

We can't show users messages from the server by default, since we have no idea if they are useful & localised, or not. It might be worth including in a "See Details" interface element as suggested in Bug 774442, however.

Please see Bug 772721 and the issues referenced there. If these don't cover this issue, please lodge a new bug.

Not at the moment: Bug 714216

This is good to know! A work around for now is to manually edit the folder names in ~/.config/geary/[account_id]/geary.ini
Comment 12 Michael Gratton 2017-10-30 21:17:11 UTC
Okay, I just activated my Riseup mailbox and had a look at the situation.

The duplicate folders occur since the mail server is not configured to use the IMAP SPECIAL-USE extension, and hence Geary has to guess what the names of the special use mailboxes (such as Sent, Archive and Junk) are.

There's a number of things that can help here:

1. Configure your desktop to use the same language as your folder names. This will mean Geary will use translated names to guess the mailbox names.

2. Use the workaround mentioned in the previous comment: Edit ~/.config/geary/[account_id]/geary.ini and make sure the mailbox names there correspond to the names on the server.

3. Upvote the Risup ticket I just lodged asking the admins to configure special use folders: https://support.riseup.net/en/topics/6066-enable-imap-special-use-flags-for-mailboxes/posts.

4. Subscribe to Bug 714106, which requests choosing special folders.

Since none of these issues are specific to Riseup, I'm going to close this bug. I recommend subscribing to the bugs referenced above to track process on those specific issues.

Please do reopen-it however if a Riseup-specific issue does arise.
