Description victor.noel 2014-10-20 07:48:28 UTC
Hi,

I have two keyboards with different layout that I would like to be able to use together without having to switch manually the layout.

I have been struggling with this missing feature for some times and solved it usually by configuring Xorg (with the InputClass config) so that depending on the hardware model, a layout is chosen, and then by disabling keyboard management from gnome (which override the Xorg config) (see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=152026 for the story).

Apparently, disabling they keyboard management doesn't work anymore in Gnome 3.14 (disabling it seems to have no effect…), so I finally take my keyboard to ask for a clean solution in Gnome.

It would be great to be able to set in Gnome options, in the case there is more than one plugged keyboard, the layout per keyboard.
And to remenber it (a bit like depending on the plugged in monitor, Gnome remember the xrandr settings).

I think it is related in a way with https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=650772 even though this bug was trying to do things smartly before being even able to do let the user, who knows what he wants, do it simply.

If it is not possible, at least add an option to use the Xorg configuration instead of the Gnome one…

Thank you!

I don't think this is a feature we're interested in having in GNOME, it would cause more problems than it solves, whether in terms of UI, integration with IBus, or integration with hardware devices.

Given that Xorg support is on the way out, and that we're going to be focusing on Wayland, we'd need to have that feature in our Wayland compositor. Reassigning to mutter.

Adding more moving parts really isn't a great way to write UI.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
