GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 737547
No squared brackets [] possible in OS X
Last modified: 2016-01-29 10:11:44 UTC
These Brackets [] are not possible under OS X. Normally, you push alt and 5 or 6 for these brackets, but it does not work in Bluefish. OS X 10.8.5 Bluefish 2.2.5 Btw: Bluefish is really great! Thanks for it!
There is similar bug https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=692721 already reported. As far as I remember there were also reports on mailing list, especially with US-International keyboard. The root cause is that bluefish uses gtk+ key mapping, and these key mappings does not work well for all keyboard layouts. I guess your keyboard does not have [], and you need to use some key combination to enter it. This combination works with other programs, but not for bluefish. Is my assumption correct? You can try to use other keyboard layouts in order to see if you will be able to enter []. It definitely works with US layout. For 2.2.7 we have scheduled to include gucharmap plugin that would allow to enter these symbols from sidebar. At the moment we can only offer workarounds since there is little hope that this issue will be fixed in gtk+ core.
Yes, its a german layout and I have to push alt + 5 or 6. Thanks :-)
Wolfgang, well my earlier comment might be not true. Bluefish uses alt+1 - alt+9 combinations for tab switching. Could you disable this feature in Preferences->User Interface->Shortcuts? After disabling, restart Bluefish (otherwise it will not take effect). Would that help to recover [ and ]?
Tab switching shortcuts moved to Command+0...Command+9 in r8405. Will be released in Bluefish 2.2.7. Please check if this recovers [].
[] are OK for me now with Bluefish 2.2.6 + Yosemite OSX 10.10, but only with these keys down all at the same time: MAJ-alt-Cmd + 5 (3 fingers + 1).
Seems to be solved, works good for me now also @ El Capitan (latest OS X 10.11)
