GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 735079
Toggling "show scrollbar" setting causes window to shrink
Last modified: 2021-06-10 20:50:29 UTC
Go to Edit -> Profile Preferences -> Scrolling and uncheck Show scrollbar. The window will shrink by one column. Now check it to restore the scrollbar. The window shrinks an additional column. Rinse and repeat until it shrinks down to 34 or 35 columns.
Version 3.14.1 gnome-terminal shrinks by one line AND one column each time it gets OR loses focus (ie when you hop between terminal windows, both shrink). This happens only when the window is not taking the entire screen or the left or right half (ie resized with Super-UP, Super-Left or Super-Right). This happens when you click to switch focus, or if you use alt-tab.
@Frank: I've tried g-t under quite a few window managers (gnome shell, unity, kde, icewm etc.) and have never experienced this. Which window manager are you using? I'm afraid that's the culprit.
... or, similarly to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=765877, this could be a Gtk+ theme that sets different size for the notebook tab bar when it's focused vs. unfocused. In that case it should be fixed in the theme.
@Frank: I believe your problem is reported as bug 743395. Let's keep this bug for the original (valid, but quite low priority) issue.
