GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 728686
Nautilus is slow
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:56:02 UTC
The test machine has a QuadCore processor and 4GB RAM. I'm considering the list view. When I open Nautilus in a folder with about 2000 files, I need to wait about 5 seconds to see the folder, and some extra time to load the icons and data. The same test with Thunar (XFCE's file manager) and Dolphin (KDE's file manager) takes less than 1 second, and don't gives me the impression that I need to wait. My conclusions are that Nautilus is too slow. I'm attaching three profilings, output result for: strace -T -ttt -f -o /tmp/$APP.strace -- $APP /home/saulo/.cache/google-chrome/Default/Cache/ Where $APP is "natilus", "thunar" and "dolphin" and the Google Chrome cache folder has a little more than 2000 files .

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
