Since GTK+ 3.10.5 the desktop entry is shown again in the GtkPlacesSidebar
(if you are not using Gnome Shell).
However the icon is not a symbolic one like all others.

gnome-icon-theme-symbolic contains a file called 'user-desktop-symbolic.svg'
but it is apparently not used.
