---- Reported by eric@yorba.org 2011-03-24 11:59:00 -0700 ----

Original Redmine bug id: 3411
Original URL: http://redmine.yorba.org/issues/3411
Searchable id: yorba-bug-3411
Original author: Eric Gregory
Original description:

Some 0.9 users have complained about having to install Totem to run Shotwell.

We use Totem to generate thumbnails of video files, and we picked Totem over
ffmpegthumbnailer largely because Totem comes with Gnome.

But now it's come to our attention that ffmpegthumbnailer has fewer
dependencies, and some users may prefer it for that reason.

Ideally, I think we'd either require Totem or ffmpegthumbnailer and execute
whichever one the user has installed. This wouldn't be terribly difficult to
implement, but would mean further investigation into Debian dependencies.

  * **Target version** set to _0.10_
  * **Priority** set to _High_

I wouldn't want to use ffmpegthumbnailer by default, because

  * it would be an additional dependency for those already in the GNOME world
  * ffmpeg uses a different set of codecs than GStreamer, so the output of ffmpegthumbnailer might not reflect what GStreamer can actually produce

But we could certainly consider a configure option '--with-ffmpeg-thumbnailer'
which would enable this. We should also encourage the GNOME people to move
totem-video-thumbnailer outside of Totem so that it becomes a more lightweight
and hence more palatable dependency.

  * **Target version** deleted (<strike>_0.10_</strike>)
  * **Priority** deleted (<strike>_High_</strike>)

I think I'd rather switch back to GStreamer as suggested in#3439, actually.
