It seems counterintuitive that messages you've received would show up in your outbox. I agree that it's counterintuitive. And new users may be afraid that deleting an outgoing message will delete also the whole conversation (which does not happen, but it's reasonable that a user thinks it may happen, as it's what he/she sees).
In addition, the right-clicking on the message and hovering over the trashcan (while in the outbox) reveals labels that say "Delete conversation" rather than "Delete message". In addition, my outbox has a count of (1) but when I select it I see a conversation with a count of (2). When I delete, I'm prompted "Do you really want to delete these messages?" (note that plural) All these suggest I'd be deleting the whole conversation, not just my failed outbox message. As a result, ever time I start Geary I get a suggestion to deleted the failed outbox message, which I hesitate to do because I don't want to delete the whole conversation. (I went ahead and deleted anyway once the annoyance outweighed the value of the thread, and was pleasantly surprised that the whole conversation was not in fact deleted.) As an aside, is there a "delete single message" action that I've missed?
Agreed that this is counter-intuitive in general. I've filed Bug 794499 to cover improving this, since it also affects the Outbox, so I'm going to mark this as a duplicate of that. Not at the moment, but it is planned: Bug 726100 *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 794499 ***
