The gsd updates plugin had functionality to detect newer OS version and offer to upgrade. We probably need to make sure that OS upgrades actually work sufficiently well before offering this in gnome-software, though.

For Fedora, I haven't heard of any major problem since fedup became the recommended upgrade method.

I agree that it would be nice to have this integrated into Softtware. Very little would be required in terms of new UI - it would essentially look like an OS Update, but with a slightly different visual treatment and an appropriate description.

Well the difference is the size of the upgrade ... downloading it silently in the background isn't a good idea.

Comment 5 Matthias Clasen 2014-12-18 16:41:18 UTC
Note that gnome-packagekit showed the 'os upgrade available' information before downloading the entire new OS. I think we probably need to do the same, so we probably want to have several different notifications here:

'An OS upgrade is available. [Download now] [Remind me later]'

...proceed to download the stuff in the background. When done:

'An OS upgrade is ready to be installed [Install now] [Remind me later]'

One other thing we should consider is the case where the OS is no longer supported. In that case, we probably want to put a stronger worded message directly in the updates page:

'Your OS is no longer suppported and won't receive updates.
We recommend upgrading to the new release. [Download now]'

The notification boxes of the mockup could be revisited because they have been redesigned recently for Gnome 3.16.

Allan, any idea how to make this look good now that the rest of the updates page no longer takes up maximum width?

https://kalev.fedorapeople.org/gnome-software-upgrades-wide-banner.png is what I have right now.
Comment 9 Richard Hughes 2016-02-20 20:41:58 UTC
We have this in 3.19.90 thanks to Kalev :)
