Description drago01 2013-10-13 16:15:26 UTC
For some reason gnome-documents use a weird "book like" layout where you have to click on an arrow to move to the next / previous page. Pretty much any other app uses simple scrolling for this which works way better because you can simply scroll down using either your mouse wheel or touchpad to move to the next page.

The current layout makes switching pages very inconvient making gnome-documents not really usefull for reading documents. For instance I always go to "edit mode" when reading google docs because it uses the well known (and working) paging pattern (you can simply scroll through the document) instead of the book like thing.

If you want to keep the book like paging for whatever reason ok (even though I personally would simply remove it) but please add some way for convenient movement through the document.

One possibility would to switch on scroll beyond the edges or allow switching pages using the arrow key.s

Related to (if not a duplicate of) bug 689041.

Hi,

Keyboard shortcuts would be really nice:

- scrolling vertically is already possible using up/down arrow keys
- moving between pages using left/right arrow keys would be awesome
- shortcut for bookmark
- if possible, all of the above in vim style key bindings so that one doesn't need to leave the home row on the keyboard would make it even more efficient.

Should I file a new RFE for this?

Thanks,
Warm regards,
Ankur

I don't think that the change proposed in bug 689041 would fully resolve the issue here.

I think the reason behind using paging buttons for navigating through a document was to match the physical arrangement of print publications, which are organised horizontally rather than vertically. While there is certainly some logic there, I have to agree that it causes some issues:

 * In terms of ergonomics it is much faster to scroll using a mouse wheel or touchpad than having to mouse over to a button.
 * Moving back and forward requires having to mouse from side of the window to the other.
 * A continuous scroll view makes it easier to move between points on pages, not just whole pages (eg. the bottom of one page and the top of the other).
 * Most documents are portrait in orientation. This means that reading a document requires both vertical and horizontal movement: you have to scroll to the bottom of the page, then page right, then page down again. This becomes particularly awkward if you want to quickly switch back and forth between points on different pages.

The other day I did a quick mockup to show how a continuous scroll view could work:
