GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 708735
Hide “power off” icon (on non-laptop machines) in lock screen
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:10:42 UTC
See screen shots. There is a “power on/off” button visible in the lock screen, but when clicking on it, a dialog opens which offers a slider to change the volume but nothing else. Compare with the screen shot from gdm: gdm also shows a very similar menu, there is also a “power on/off” button and a speaker button in the panel, but when clicking on this in gdm, the dialog which opens has a slider to change the volume *and* a “power on/off” button (which can be clicked and works).

Created attachment 255673 [details] shutdown-and-volume-lockscreen-enter-password.png “shutdown and power on/off” clicked in the panel in the lockscreen when the password entry field is shown. There is only a volume slider here as well.

We don't show a power off button in the menu because we don't allow shutting down the machine without unlocking. I guess we could remove the on/off icon from the panel in that case.
yeah, I just noticed this. the issue is obviously that the icon misleads you as to the menu's abilities in this case. the icon should be something else in cases where the menu doesn't actually offer the ability to power down. still valid in 3.13.

By default I cannot see a "power off" icon in the top bar on the lock screen in 3.24, but maybe that's due to settings like in bug 711244 (though is that about the lock screen, or only the login screen)? Hence wondering if this is still valid?
(In reply to André Klapper from comment #7) > By default I cannot see a "power off" icon in the top bar You are likely using a laptop. The 'power' icon is used instead of the battery icon to make sure that there is at least one icon to access the system menu (all other indicators are optional).
Ah. :)

Would be good if it was only ever shown when none of the others are. It would fix this problem and the question of why it's there in the first place.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
