Evolution latest version built from git shows black background for mail viewer.
The black background appears both for message preview as well as when the mail is opened in a new window.

Oddly enough, Evolution 3.6 and 3.8 don't have this behaviour. They show email background normally (off-white). 

This behaviour is consistent with Ambiance and Radiance theme for Ubuntu. I have checked for 13.04 and 13.10 both.
