GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 701414
Replace view selection controls with a single drop down
Last modified: 2015-02-18 18:18:15 UTC
The toolbar currently uses three joined buttons for controlling the view. I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with this approach: it adds quite a lot of weight to the toolbar, and the relationship between the view toggles and the menu button is rather ambiguous. I think it would be better to replace the three buttons with a single menu button: https://raw.github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/master/nautilus/nautilus-menus.png
High resolution mockup for the menu - https://raw.github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/master/nautilus/nautilus-next/gear-menu.png In these mockups, the view menu takes the place of the gear menu. They could potentially coexist to begin with though.
Allan, For the view selection. Can you please add the list of actions that would be visible when the GRID view is selected. Also How does the preview mode turn up? By "space bar"?

Also How does the preview mode turn up? > By "space bar"? The mockup I linked to in the comment 2 is somewhat speculative, and a lot of other changes are required before we can implement it. In grid view, the menu would look the same, except that Visible Columns would be insensitive.
3.14 is over - move to the 3.16 target milestone.
This has been fixed in master.
