Broken desktop during twinview with two monitors

Using nvidia-settings to configure a second monitor as "twinview" (being right-of the primary monitor), causes all icons on Gnome's desktop to disappear and the background to become offset. Disabling the second monitor does not fix the problem, and the desktop icons remain gone until a reboot.

Possibly related, the screenshot program captures a corrupted image.

Seven years later, anyone knows if this still happens in a recent version of gnome-shell (currently 3.38)? Wayland or X? Which nvidia-settings version? Which distro?
Or is this issue obsolete? Thanks in advance.
