When on mobile broadband Ubuntu does not check for updates, which is a very good functionality.

However, many people have data contracts on their smart phones and use tethering via WLAN to share the connection. The problem is that my phone appears as a hotspot and thus Ubuntu does not recognize that I am on broadband and uses most of my monthly traffic just to check for updates.

I would strongly recommend a script in the WLAN configuration to mark a connection as mobile.

This is actually implemented in Android now. You are able to select which Wifi connections that really are mifis.
