GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 693073
Option to mark wireless connection as mobile to save costs
Last modified: 2013-04-15 15:03:44 UTC
Originally reported at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1113831 When on mobile broadband Ubuntu does not check for updates, which is a very good functionality. However, many people have data contracts on their smart phones and use tethering via WLAN to share the connection. The problem is that my phone appears as a hotspot and thus Ubuntu does not recognize that I am on broadband and uses most of my monthly traffic just to check for updates. I would strongly recommend a script in the WLAN configuration to mark a connection as mobile. I am the downstream reporter of this. In case of any questions I am happy to answer them. Thanks for upstreaming Marius.
This is actually implemented in Android now. You are able to select which Wifi connections that really are mifis.
