In Gnome 3.4, the background color of entry widgets could be set. This is typically set to red when a failure happens.

I will attach a picture of what happens now. Instead of the whole entry turning red, only the edges do. The text turns white, like it used to, but this makes the text invisible. The widget on the left is when a "normal" background is set. The widget on the right is when a red background is set.

The application is Geany, but I also use this style UI in my own apps and they are exhibiting the same behavior since my upgrade to Gnome 3.6.
