GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 686961
Adding a bookmark is very counterintuitive
Last modified: 2013-11-21 14:35:59 UTC
TL;DR: should be able to drag-and-drop folders into the bookmarks list. I wanted to add a folder to my bookmarks in Nautilus. I already have some bookmarks there that were added in 3.4, but I forgot how I did it last time. I tried the following methods, all of which failed: 1. Drag the folder onto the text saying "Bookmarks". This had no effect. 2. Drag the folder onto one of the existing bookmarks or onto the blank area to the left/right of an existing bookmarks. This copied the folder into the bookmarked folder, which is reasonable, I guess. 3. Right click the folder and look for a "Bookmark" option in the popup menu; there was no such option, not even in the "Send to..." dialog. 4. Open the "Bookmarks" dialog from the main ("Files") menu; drag-and-drop the folder into the list in the dialog. This had no effect. 5. Select the folder and select Gear > "Bookmark this location". This bookmarked the parent folder (the folder I currently had open). After that, I finally found the correct sequence of actions: navigate into the directory, then select Gear > "Bookmark this location". Between steps 3 and 4, there was a lot of head-scratching and Googling; the whole process took 4 minutes or so. At least one of the 5 things I tried should have worked as expected (preferably the first thing: drag-and-drop the folder onto the text saying "Bookmarks").
I had the very same problem. I actually had to read this bug report in order to understand that the parent folder is being bookmarked (so thank you). I presume that drag and drop is intuitive and should be implemented.
Hi I have the same problem on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail (testing) I try to create a bookmark for a folder using the HUD command, but the only entry that the HUD shew me for Bookmark request is the dialog box for managing bookmark. Not the Add a bookmark option So I try to search and finaly I found it under the gears icon. As you know, the HUD use the Dbusmenu. So why I can't find all the option under the gears menu in HUD (I can just see those under the unify menu). This is a major bug which affect others projects and GNU/Linux distribution. Plz, take a look at this Best Regards, Winael
I completely agree with the original reporter. And I agree that allowing the user to drag and drop a folder onto Bookmarks would help a lot here.
Created attachment 260399 [details] screencast of adding a bookmark in Nautilus 3.10.0 This bug is fixed in Nautilus 3.10, I've attached a screencast showing the add of a bookmark by DND.
This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
Nelson, I believe this is only half fixed. If there is at least one folder Bookmarked, the feature you recorded (thanks!) works well. However, if there are no folders Bookmarked, the Bookmark subheading does not appear in the side bar. When this subheading isn't there, drag and dropping a folder around the side bar does not add a Bookmark, so adding the first bookmark still requires the confusing trip to Folder > Gear > Bookmark this Location

@Nelson Benitez, I would not even say it's half-fixed, it's quarterly fixed. Some of the ways the (OP) Original Poster shared are much more intuitive. a. Right click the folder and look for a "Bookmark" option in the popup menu - this actually would make it much intuitive as that's the first thing I did. b. I use the keyboard to navigate between directories quite a bit. It would be nice if I were to be able to come to a directory and just press CTRL+D and a bookmark would happen. Currently this has no effect. I dunno if this has been fixed in 3.10 or not. Another thing you said this has been fixed in Nautilus 3.10, then go on to say that this has been fixed in the development version, the development version is/would be 3.12 as I'm following the GNOME development cycle as well. What diff. or fixes are there in Nautilus 3.12 > Nautilus 3.10 for this bug/feature. Looking forward to have some more info.
