Description Cosimo Cecchi 2012-09-10 19:19:38 UTC
I had updates available on my system and a notification popped up asking me if I wanted to install them. The notification said "Software updates are available" and had an "Install Updates" button. Then I noticed the Shell user menu had an "Install Updates & Restart" menu item, so I went for that instead.

Is there a difference between the updates as performed by clicking on the notification action and by the shell menu item (e.g. are they performed online when clicking on the notification)?
If yes, okay (but I think having two different ways of performing updates is really confusing); if not, I think we should make the notification wording consistent with the Shell menu item, i.e. it should mention the fact that your computer is going to be restarted etc.

I should probably explain this a little better: I don't think there's anything wrong with how the notification itself works.
I think it would be fine to just change the wording of the action button to say "View Updates" instead of "Install Updates", to make it clear it's a different (and non-dangerous) action from the one triggered by the Shell user menu.

As mclasen noted, his https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687149 is very similar to this.

To me, I'm not sure this just needs little patch-ups, but perhaps a clear plan as to what the update notification and installation experience actually ought to be.

Looking at how Windows 7 does it, when updates are available it downloads them in the background, and notifies you when they're downloaded and ready for installation. The notification lets you examine what the updates are, and trigger a reboot to install them. That sounds broadly like what we ought to be doing here; all the bits ought to be working together towards a single design.

As of current F20 with gnome-software, there is a View option in the notification. It doesn't actually *work*, but that's filed separately. This can probably be closed?

There's no updates plugin in gnome-settings-daemon anymore, the functionality is now in gnome-software.
