Description bwatkins 2012-07-27 18:22:42 UTC
I've had this bug since totem 3.x, and still happens in latest totem 3.4.x. If I go fullscreen there is no way for me to bring up the video controls by moving my mouse (asus u52f with elantech touchpad). Moving it does absolutely nothing, controls don't come up. It does work if I plug in a USB mouse. This bug makes totem utterly unusable. This bug has been around for a while and I've seen bug reports for it on both ubuntu and fedora's bug trackers. I also had the issue in archlinux, so it definitely seems to be an upstream bug.

I confirm this bug on Archlinux on an Asus Eee PC 901, Totem 3.4.3. No pointer nor control appear on fullscreen mode if a mouse is not present. Moreover, if a USB mouse is pluged in while playing a video on Totem, then Totem will crash.

I therefore recommend to increase the priority and severity levels to HIGH and CRITICAL.

Ubuntu uses ancient versions of Totem. Please test with Totem 3.5.x (to be 3.6) and let me know whether that's still a problem.

If it crashes, it's a bug. File a separate bug with a backtrace.

@Bastien I currently run arch linux, but also experienced this issue in fedora and ubuntu. fedora and arch do have the latest stable totem. I will try and see if I can compile totem 3.5 or something and test, but at the very least it shouldn't take too long for gnome 3.6 to come to arch and I will be able to test it then.

No hurry. The code to check the movement has changed, so should hopefully be fixed.

Just got totem 3.6 on ubuntu 12.10 with the gnome 3 ppa, and the bug seems to be fixed! Fullscreen controls now working for me.

Excellent. Closing as per comment 5.
Comment 7 bwatkins 2012-11-11 04:07:09 UTC
heh... I recently got a new laptop (system76 lemur ultra), and now I'm experiencing this exact same issue on this new machine with totem 3.6.0. Its now working fine on the machine in my OP as I mentioned before, which has an elantech touchpad. This new one has a synaptics touchpad. Symptoms are the exact same as in my OP, moving mouse with touchpad has absolutely no effect, fullscreen controls won't show.
Comment 8 bwatkins 2012-12-18 04:44:49 UTC
Will this ever be completely fixed? :( It now works on the laptop in my original report with totem 3.6, but still does not work with my other laptop, so definitely not totally fixed.
Comment 9 bwatkins 2012-12-18 04:47:58 UTC
its a standard synaptics touchpad:
