GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 680210
Provide an option to hide the topbar
Last modified: 2012-07-19 14:50:03 UTC
Please provide an option to hide the Gnome Shell topbar. The bar is actually useless and constitutes a usability limit for the following reasons: 1. It is space wasting, especially on netbooks. 2. There is no need to have a topbar since there is no tasklist and there are no tray icons. 3. The text displayed in the bar duplicates information since the are window titles. 4. It was easier to reach and click tabs in browsers if there was no topbar. 5. It was easier to close windows by just moving the pointer to the top right corner and click the "X" button. Extensions to hide the topbar exist but they often don't work well, especially when a new Gnome version comes out. It's unacceptable that users don't have an official option to disable the topbar. Thanks for consideration.

Currently there are no plans to provide such an option (and maintain its code) by default. Also see bug 663141 comment 2 and comment 4.
