GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 671831
Overzealous renaming to "Web"
Last modified: 2012-03-14 09:23:09 UTC
In some places Epiphany is renamed to Web where it should have been left as it is: In /src/ephy-main.c:208 string "Could not start Web" In /src/ephy-main.c:322 string "Web options" In GPL text /src/window-commands.c:1125 there is "Web" and "GNOME Web Browser" In /src/window-commands.c:1247 string "Web Website" Also, in "About" dialog, there is string "Copyright 2003-1012 The Web Developers", which sounds like "Developers of the World Wide Web". This issue also appears in bug 671424: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=671424 And is discussed in mailing list: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-i18n/2012-March/msg00078.html
*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 671424 ***
bug 671424 does not address the confusing part of the issue. (In comment #0) > Also, in "About" dialog, there is string "Copyright 2003-1012 The Web > Developers", which sounds like "Developers of the World Wide Web". I would suggest to use "Copyright 2003-1012 GNOME <app> Developers" where <app> is Web, Contacts, Documents, etc.
(In reply to comment #1) > > *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 671424 *** I don't think this is a duplicate? Seems to be complaining about the exact opposite problem.

I agree that "The Web Developers" sounds as if we develop the WWW.
To me, there are all problematic for a copyright notice because they are too generic. There is no way for random people to associate the notice with a clear product. In addition, if I got it right GNOME lawyers asked to associate the GNOME trademark and logo closer with the product, I believe for the same reason I am mentioning here. "Copyright © Documents Developers" "Copyright © Files Developers" "Copyright © Boxes Developers" etc. For this bug report I think we should 1. reopen (it seems I can't) 2. - either focus on "Web" - either focus on "copyright notice" (and change the title) - or? (btw, nice to hear from you :)
