GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 671461
some chart formatting disappears after save>close>open ods document
Last modified: 2012-03-25 06:41:44 UTC
Created attachment 209082 [details] formatted chart after saving the ods file (top) and after closing and reopen (bottom) Some format options of a chart disappear when saving then closing and re-opening an .ods document (see attached files: before_closing.jpg and after_reopening.jpg). The formatting features which disappear are (in this case) the values of the main and secondary graduations (on both X and Y axes), and the format of the axes scales.
Would you be able provide the original Gnumeric file? This makes testing easier. Which version of the ODF exporter are you using? With or without foreign elements? If you save without foreign elements you will of course loose all formatting characteristics that are not supported natively in ODF. And that are a lot.
I should have noted that the two images seem to be much more similar than I would have expected or hoped for. Note that exporting to ODF should really only be used to transfer to another application, where you will always loose the properties not supported natively in ODF (ODF allows extensions aka "foreign elements" but a differnet application will not normally not be able to understand those extensions.)

I saved the file (see 671461.ods) as ODF/Openoffice with foreign elements (*.ods). No idea of the version of the ODF exporter (gnumeric is 1.10.17). I use this format to open/modify files using OpenOffice on a PC with windows XPPro... Actually the compatibility is quite good, but when working on dozens of charts, this "bug" is ennoying...
Created attachment 209100 [details] original see 671461.ods file
When open the file in OpenOffice you will unfortunately always loose some formatting (limitations of the ODF format). But of course possibly not as many as you do currently.
671461.ods is the saved file, showing the graph according to the "bottom image" in the jpg. Do you have a file (.gnumeric) showing the graph as in the top image?
Created attachment 209101 [details] .gnumeric file here is the .gnumeric file
Created attachment 209104 [details] image of plot saved and opened by 1.11.2 THe attached file shows plot after the file was saved as ods and opened using Gnumeric 1.11.2. The differences I see are: format of the x-tick-labels color of the grid lines Did I miss anything? Note that the spacing of the major y-tick labels matches what I see when I open the gnumeric file. This is different from what is shown in your image.

This is different from what is shown in your image. Actually you're right, I am presently working with this file and the version I attached had been modified after it was saved as .ods Anyway, I think I will stop using OpenOffice for such tasks, .gnumeric format is much more ergonomic. Thanks a lot for your assistance!
By the way, thank you for submitting this bug report. There seem to be a bunch of issues with the export/import of some of the other graphs. This gives us nice examples to try to improve both Gnumeric's import/export to ODF and the ODF specification itself.
We now import color and width of the grid lines.
color and thickness of the grid lines is now fixed. I still see: incorrect formatting of the x-tick-labels and y-tick-labels incorrect size for the data point dots
size for the data point dots is now being imported and exported. I still see: incorrect formatting of the x-tick-labels and y-tick-labels
The formatting of the x-tick-labels and y-tick-labels is fixed now. If you find other problems in teh chart import/export please create individual bug reports for them. This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
