if icon view size is increased (say to 400%) the spacing between the icons also becomes ridiculously large so that we end up with only one column of large icons while with fixed spacing we could easily have at least 3 columns...

Confirming this, it affects Compact view, list view, and to a much greater extent Icon View (as shown in the attached screenshot). Please don't increase inter-icon spacing when zooming in.

Forgot to say this bug affects nautilus 3.2.1-2+b1 from official Debian repos.
