Description A. Fakhouri 2011-11-18 21:55:50 UTC
Discription:
When going to the Applications, in the Activities, the default to be shown is All apps. So, when a user goes to this tab, s/he needs to wait for a long time till the list is loaded, and the increase of time becomes dramatic if the machine is old, or if the user is having a lot of apps installed.

Suggested fix:
have the "favourite/preferred"* apps, or the "recently used" apps, shown by default, and if the user wants to see all the apps, it's possible through (by example) the list on the right (in ltr languages). this way is used both in KDE and Unity, and seems to be widely accepted!

* can be same as in the dock, or by default apps for certain types of files, or manually specified; anything would by useful; use your imagination! :)

The bug itself (slowness) is already reported and tracked in this bugzilla: bug 647778.

As for your suggestion it will be more or less addressed by a partial overview re-design that's being discussed. See http://jimmac.musichall.cz/log/?p=1181 .
