Description Aleksander Śmierciak 2011-11-14 17:58:22 UTC
This bug has been reported here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/889911

What happens:
In Nautilus, when creating two folders an error occurs, preventing creation of two or more folders in a row (hotkeys, etc.).
"The item could not be renamed
There is no "" in this folder. Perhaps it was just moved or deleted?"
Comment 1 André Klapper 2011-11-15 12:25:00 UTC
Please provide a step by step procedure in order to reproduce.
Comment 2 Aleksander Śmierciak 2011-11-15 13:29:23 UTC
Of course, here you are.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Nautilus and explore any folder/place.
2. Create a folder using hotkey SHIFT + CTRL + N, type a name for it and press ENTER.
3. Create a second folder using hotkey SHIFT + CTRL + N, type a name for it and press ENTER.
4. Most (90%~) of the time*, an error window will show up with text:
"The item could not be renamed
There is no "" in this folder. Perhaps it was just moved or deleted?"
The folder which was created as second will have its name left as "Untitled Folder".

* it appears to me as if this error shows up only when creating said two folders in a short time and without changing current selection. Both 32 and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu where tested and it has to be noted that this misbehaviour isn't quite fresh, actually I do remember it occuring many times over the last year or so.

Because it cannot be reproduced if it takes longer than 6 seconds or so, I think it might be because of slow folder name changing procedures and the fact that when creating a new folder, it is first created as "Untitled folder" and then the user can rename it.

The video above apparently has weird colours (perhaps a problem of Desktop Recorder which I used), but this is not the case, fortunately.
It show how I create three pairs of folders, and each time get an error. Please refer to it as a step-by-step guide on how to reproduce.

Adnotation: while I use mouse to navigate on this video, I create folders by Shift + Ctrl + N combination, type the desired name and press Enter (keyboard only it is).

Does this still occur in master? I can't reproduce it using the instructions.

I can still experience this bug in Ubuntu 15.04, as described in http://askubuntu.com/questions/579690/workaround-for-bug-889911-creating-multiple-folders-in-nautilus-fails
.
