Description Gil Forcada 2011-10-23 10:11:33 UTC
Right now a .po file from a Mallard file gives us something like (from Empathy docs):

#: C/account-jabber.page:52(p)
msgid ""
"Some Jabber servers may encrypt data using invalid certificates, or using "
"certificates from unknown authorities. If you trust the server you are "
"connecting to, you can select <gui>Ignore SSL certificate errors</gui> to "
"allow encrypted communication with invalid certificates."
msgstr ""

#: C/account-jabber.page:59(gui)
msgid "Resource"
msgstr "

#: C/account-irc.page:31(title)
msgid "IRC account details"
msgstr ""

#: C/account-jabber.page:7(desc)
msgid "Advanced options for Jabber and Google Talk accounts."
msgstr ""

It would be really useful if this (gui), (p), (title) and (desc) were provided as a msgctxt. For example:

#: C/account-jabber.page:52(p)
msgid ""
"Some Jabber servers may encrypt data using invalid certificates, or using "
"certificates from unknown authorities. If you trust the server you are "
"connecting to, you can select <gui>Ignore SSL certificate errors</gui> to "
"allow encrypted communication with invalid certificates."
msgstr ""

#: C/account-jabber.page:59(gui)
msgid "Resource"
msgstr "

#: C/account-irc.page:31(title)
msgid "IRC account details"
msgstr ""

#: C/account-jabber.page:7(desc)
msgid "Advanced options for Jabber and Google Talk accounts."
msgstr ""

Just like GTK+ is doing:

msgctxt "keyboard label"
msgid "BackSpace"
msgstr ""

msgctxt "calendar:day:digits"
msgid "%d"
msgstr ""

msgctxt "input method menu"
msgid "None"
msgstr ""

That way gtranslator, poedit, virtaal, lokalize and all this programs would show this information about the strings.

For a translator it's really useful to distinguish between a title and a paragraph or a short description or a gui interface element.

(Don't know if this is the proper bugzilla product and component, just move it).

gnome-doc-utils has been superseded by yelp-xsl, yelp-tools, and itstool.

gnome-doc-utils will not see any further development, hence closing as WONTFIX.
