GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 661212
show address in google maps
Last modified: 2013-03-21 00:53:16 UTC
Even in the absence of a GNOME Maps app it would be really nice to be able to display the address in Google Maps. Perhaps what we need is to define a content/uri handler for maps and then have services hook into that. So that addresses from any app can launch the appropriate tool. Google Maps might be able to register as the map handler somehow.
WebOS has this: http://www.precentral.net/change-default-mapping-application
For sure we want this!
I would prefer an open service like OpenStreetMap (http://osm.org , data under a free license). Or one of the services that uses their data, but not their server resources (like http://open.mapquest.com ). This is because I believe open projects should support each other when possible. There are also some desktop apps capable of displaying OSM data, such as Marble (in the KDE project), Navit (independent program, but not really user friendly to install), gosmore (in development), or work on Emerillon (which was supposed to become the Gnome map app). For a better list, see the OSM wiki: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Software/Desktop
Seems like this is a dupe. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 658553 ***
