I can see from the screenshot that you are using fallback mode, which probably means that your computer does not have working hardware 3D acceleration. This is required by Clutter, which Cheese uses for effects. Bug 654913 was recently fixed, which checks whether Clutter was initalised correctly, and exits with an error message if there was a problem. Unfortunately, this fix will be in version 3.2.0, and will probably not be included in a 3.0 version of Cheese.

Can you run Cheese from a terminal to see if you get any error message from Clutter? To start a terminal:

1. Start the ‘Terminal’ application (the icon is on your desktop)
2. Type ‘cheese’ into the terminal and press return
3. Copy any error messages into this bug report

If Clutter could not be initialised, then Cheese will not work with your computer, sorry!

Tomasz, as your issue is different to the original reporter, please file a new bug. The warnings about GtkButton images are expected, and due to bug 656989.
