Description John 2011-09-20 05:08:38 UTC
When in a playlist or library which is sorted by artist name, instead of scrolling top to bottom, or searching, it would be very quick to simply tap "c" and be at the first(or 'last' if it sorted Z-to-A) artist whose name begins with "c".

Also, as a further implementation of the idea, typing "a","b","c" in short time span could scroll to the first artist named "abc*".

Since "n" and "b" are mapped currently to play the next or previous song, a logical remapping could be the left and right direction keys.

It could also be used with any alphabetical sort, e.g. song title, album, etc.

The feature you're looking for actually already exists -- sort of -- but it isn't easily discoverable because Banshee requires you to first press the "?" key before typing "abc". There's already a bug report requesting to remove the "?" requirement, so I'm marking this as a duplicate.

Thanks for the bug report. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find.

Thanks! I never knew that. Is there a way to have it only search through the artist names? If I type just the first letter of the name I want to find, it goes to the first song with the title beginning with that letter. Unfortunately, I have (feat. "artist") for a number of tracks, so it's rare I end up getting to the artist, even if I type the whole name. Or, if there is a way to have it find the first match of the column the list is sorted by?

Thanks again

The possibility to limit type-ahead to only the artist column, or only the primary sort column, could definitely be a useful option. This is not currently possible, but you might want to open a new bug report requesting this feature.
