Description Sarbyn 2011-06-07 09:30:42 UTC
Description of problem:

With ATI fglrx driver, gnome shell is totally messed up. I can use fedora 15
only with gnome classic (and compiz enabled and working). With that
configuration, it's all ok...smooth and perfect. Gnome shell is unusuable (see
the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9HVwi_AgtY, or the picture at
http://s0.i1.picplzthumbs.com/upload/img/2d/5a/02/2d5a0247e02ba4449749ef5ad7e37da505063514_wmlg.jpg
- top bar problem and the red circled zone)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 15

xorg-x11-server-Xorg.x86_64 1.10.1-14.fc15
xorg-x11-drv-catalyst.x86_64 11.4-1.fc15 @rpmfusion-nonfree
xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs.x86_64 11.4-1.fc15 @rpmfusion-nonfree

How reproducible:

Simply use gnome shell

Actual results:
See the photo:

See the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9HVwi_AgtY

Expected results:
Normal use of gnome shell

fglrx is known to have problems with gnome-shell and trying to work around its bugs is low priority AFAIK (I'm not a maintainer). You'd have a better experience with the free radeon driver. You can also try to report the bug to AMD.
Comment 2 M. Scholz 2011-10-17 23:23:09 UTC
Hey,
I have the same problem with Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneric) and gnome-shell with the fglrx-driver (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series). Is there any reaction by AMD?
Comment 3 Milan Bouchet-Valat 2011-10-18 09:11:15 UTC
It seems nobody filed a bug to them, so you can do that, and maybe you'll get reactions... Please post the link here if you do so.

(Or you can give up and try the free driver. :-p)
Comment 4 Martin Dengler 2011-10-18 17:53:24 UTC
An unofficial AMD bug is http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=99
Comment 5 M. Scholz 2011-10-18 20:06:49 UTC
I've found that bug too, installed the new driver (flgrx 11.9) and now gnome-shell works almost perfect :).
(But now I have also problems on startup - the xserver isn't starting automatically :/ )
Comment 6 Martin Dengler 2011-10-19 17:46:27 UTC
flgrx 11.9 does indeed fix the top icon corruption, but many drop-down menus and dialog boxes are still corrupted (diagonally skewed and wrapped), which is a show-stopper as one interacts with those quite a lot. The Overview and Message Tray animations cause full-screen corruption but that I could live with.

duplicate of bug 632098
Comment 8 Jeremy Bicha 2011-10-20 01:14:52 UTC
Nevermind, my previous comment was the Debian bug number.
Comment 9 Sergio Josemar Pavez Vera 2011-10-21 00:07:57 UTC
guys, I'm having the same problem that Martin Dengler
I hope someone could find a solution, because the worse case for this problem is when de drop-down menu has lots of elements, like in my case de markers of firefox, when i click to see them all the desktop crash and have a restart, but in some cases the desktop doesn't start again.

I cant even take a snapshot of this because the desktop disapear and appear again wiht a blank snapshot.
Comment 10 Christian Kirbach 2012-01-29 17:12:59 UTC
First of all,

let me state that the issues are actually due to bugs in AMD's fglrx driver.
Please try the latest driver (currently 12.1) and give brief feedback.

I am glad to say that in recent 2-3 months some major issues have been addressed by AMD, others still remain.
I say that judging by the comments people give and by my own experience.
Graphical corruptions and slanted graphics like

http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=99
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=339

should have been fixed in many cases, according to comments. Please try the latest driver and try filing bugs in that inofficial AMD bug reporting site. Look for already existing reports first.

Known issues remain, like a segmentation fault
http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=408
that was also reported in GNOME bugzilla, and general poor performance of the Shell.
For bad performance with gnome shell, as a workaround try adding

export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none

to /etc/environment and restart X. It might help.
Comment 11 Florian Müllner 2013-06-14 16:43:05 UTC
So - still an issue with current driver versions?
Comment 12 Christian Kirbach 2013-06-14 22:55:51 UTC
No feedback in 6 months :/
The only conclusion is that the issues are gone.
Comment 13 Florian Müllner 2013-06-17 11:10:14 UTC
OK, let's close it then ...
