GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 648552
Long folder names should be ellipsized in location bar's buttons
Last modified: 2011-04-25 18:23:17 UTC
When a folder name is very long, which occurs for example when browsing a remote share named "$FOLDER on $HOST as $USER", the location bar looks really broken: 1) The button for the current folder takes most of the space 2) Next, Previous and Search buttons can be hidden 3) Under certain size conditions, the toolbar can be completely empty The best explanation is a good screenshot (TM): - Attachment 1 [details] shows a very long folder name and a correct bar (real situation, I resized the dialog so that it's wide enough). - Attachment 2 [details] shows the same situation, but with a slightly narrower window: the Search button is hidden, while I think the button's text should rather be ellipsized in this case. - Attachment 3 [details] shows again the same situation, where the window is too narrow for the name of the folder to be fully shown: it's clearly sub-optimal, since neither the buttons nor the folder name are shown. If the latter was ellipsized, both could be shown. Maybe it would even be good to set max-width-chars, so that long folder names don't take space that could be used by parent folders. If a folder name is more than, say, 20 chars, it's probably more useful to use pixels to show it's parent, allowing to go easily to it, rather than showing the full name. (Even more clever, it would be useful to make the current folder name I'm using Nautilus 3.0.0 on Fedora 15. (Other than that, the new Nautilus is really great!)
Created attachment 186550 [details] Correct bar (wide enough window)
Created attachment 186551 [details] Broken bar (hidden Search button)
Created attachment 186552 [details] Broken bar (all buttons hidden)
