GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 643332
closing skype sends it to the message tray. It is not possible to re-open the running instance
Last modified: 2011-03-25 19:07:56 UTC
Created attachment 181949 [details] skype instances in message-tray If skype is closed using the window close button in the top right corner it is normally closed to the system tray (when not running gnome-shell) however this does not happen in gnome-shell (which might be by design). The skype process is still visible in the message tray, but no options appear when clicking it. When opening skype again from the application menu or the dock, a new instance of the program is opened instead of the already running one, which cannot be used because it detects the still running skype process. There is as far as I know no way to get back to the running skype process. The only way to close it is killing it using system monitor or the terminal. Closing the new skype process (via the windowborder button) also leaves this one running, minimizing it to the messagetray. (see attachment) (I tried to look better for duplicates this time, sorry if I missed one) (btw os is ubuntu 10.10 (x86)64)
I guess you are trying to click the icon from the overview? Unfortunately this is something which does not work for legacy status icons, but it is supposed to work from the normal desktop.
I just discovered that it is indeed possible to click / right click the icon in the messagetray if not in the overview I was clickin the skype text labe next to the ico which has no hotspot, it might be an idea to add that? This makes it at least possible to get back to the running skype process. However I thought that one of the design ideas behind gnome-shell was that if you start a program twice that it will in principle open the already running instance, unless you explicitly righclick the icon in the dock and ask it to open a new window. This obviously does not hold true for skype. Clicking the icon brings you a new instance, not the already running one. Is this intended behaviour?
The entire label is clickable now, and it's clickable from the overview too (although that will drop you out of the overview). *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 630842 ***
